Super Bowl and World Series upped Houston’s Airbnb game in 2017
Around 162,000 visitors booked local Airbnbs last year, with major sporting events racking up the highest single-night tallies of inbound arrivals all year.
The biggest night for Airbnb bookings in Houston was Sunday, Feb. 5 when the New England Patriots played the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl at NRG Stadium. There were 5,900 guest arrivals that night, new Airbnb data show.
Monday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 4 were the second and third-highest Airbnb booking nights in Houston last year, followed by Oct. 29, the night of World Series Game 3 when there were 3,700 guest arrivals.
“The weekends Houston hosted the Super Bowl and World Series games are great examples of how the Airbnb community helps cities scale accommodations to host an influx of visitors,” Laura Spanjian, Airbnb public policy director for the southwest, said in a statement.
More than 40 percent of Airbnb guests, Spanjian added, spend money in the neighborhoods in which they stay, driving economic activity in places that don’t typically benefit from tourism.
Airbnb also facilitated lodging options in the weeks following Hurricane Harvey.
More than 1,000 hosts in Texas and Louisiana offered their Airbnbs to flood evacuees for free last year.
